Michael Rieth is a recognized expert in the field of microbiology and looks back on over 30 years of professional experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He gives presentations, provides training in his area of expertise and publishes in journals in books. Michael Rieth is involved in a number of expert associations and received the Wallhäußer award in 2013.

After receiving his PhD in 1987 from the Institute of Microbiology at the University of Göttingen, Michael Rieth remained at the university for a short period of time before starting his career in the pharmaceutical industry by joining biosyn Arzneimittel GmbH in Stuttgart in 1988.

After working for Nordmark Arzneimittel GmbH in process development and for Schering AG as Head of Quality Control Biology, he joined Merck KGaA in Darmstadt. From 1999 until the beginning of 2014, he was manager of the Microbiological Quality Control Group. Then he was responsible for virological and bacterial issues of microbiological safety in the Global Regulatory Affairs department until his retirement in May 2020.

Michael Rieth was and is a member of many working committees and associations, including the Association for General and Applied Microbiology (VAAM), VfA, PDA, German Pharmacopoeia Commission and EDQM. His book on pharmaceutical microbiology was published in 2012 by Wiley-VCH which is available since 2017 as revised 2nd edition. In 2016, "Hygiene in Drug Production" was published, and in 2021 "Endotoxins and Pyrogens".
