The announcement was confirmed by Health and Social Affairs Minister Alex Azar at a Congress hearing on 12 March 2019.

Sharpless has been director of the NCI since October 2017. Previously, he was director of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of North Carolina (UNC) and served in the medical and genetics departments of the faculties of Harvard Medical School and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
